Substance Abuse Prevention for First Responders
First Responders’ workplaces are, by their nature, highly stressful. Traumatic events, typically unexpected and sudden, fall well beyond the bounds of normal experience; hence they can have profound physical, emotional and psychological impacts – even for the best trained, experienced and seasoned First Responder’s. First responders must cope with these stressors. The culture of the First Responder workplace often encourages alcohol use as a coping mechanism. Research has demonstrated that almost 25% of First Responder’s have become alcohol dependent due to occupational stress. But many researchers believe this is far lower than the true figure of responders who are substance users and abusers.
