Research has shown that medications for alcoholism and drug addiction used in conjunction with substance abuse counseling can increase an individual’s ability to successfully maintain abstinence. For qualified patients, Livengrin offers non-addictive, anti-craving medication assisted therapy to provide an added layer of protection against relapse plus support for those experiencing the struggles of addiction.
Livengrin was an early adopter of Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) using Vivitrol/Naltrexone, a non-addictive, non-mind altering medication that reduces the urge to consume alcohol and opioids. The medication also moderates the effects of consuming alcohol and opioids.
Reduced Cravings and Better Outcomes
Naltrexone is taken as a daily oral tablet (Revia). Vivitrol injections are administered monthly. Vivitrol/Naltrexone is shown to reduce cravings for alcohol and opiates, and should a patient relapse occur, patients are more likely to stay engaged in treatment and continue in their effort to stay sober. Vivitrol blocks the receptors in the brain so that opiates do not attach and no “high” is experienced. Similarly, alcohol users on Vivitrol report that the “euphoric” effect of drinking is eliminated, often discouraging repeated attempts.
Livengrin uses Vivitrol/Naltrexone with alcohol counseling and drug abuse counseling.
Vivitrol/Naltrexone has been shown to:
- Prevent a lapse from becoming a full-blown relapse
- Reduce symptoms of protracted withdrawal such as anxiety, cravings, and insomnia
- Lengthen periods of abstinence
- Support positive effects of treatment, foster counseling gains
- Allow brain cells to return to normal function
